The Tech Coalition is proud to announce that we have updated and expanded our sublicensing agreement to offer access to Microsoft’s updated PhotoDNA technology. This technology is instrumental in supporting the tech industry to detect and remove child sexual abuse material (CSAM). We can support both member and non-member companies to implement this technology to create a safer digital world for all. Through the Tech Coalition's support, companies can proactively identify and eliminate illegal and harmful content from their platforms, protecting their users and upholding their commitment to online safety.

What is PhotoDNA?

Originally developed in 2009 through a partnership between Microsoft and Dartmouth College, PhotoDNA has become a cornerstone in the global fight against online child sexual exploitation. This innovative technology creates a unique 'fingerprint' (or hash) for images, enabling the identification and removal of known CSAM. Today, PhotoDNA is utilized by organizations worldwide and has played a crucial role in detecting, disrupting, and reporting millions of instances of child sexual abuse imagery.

Previously limited to CSAM detection, Microsoft has updated PhotoDNA’s licensing to include terrorist content and non-consensual intimate imagery of adults. With these changes, PhotoDNA now provides a comprehensive solution for companies to address a broader range of harmful content without compromising user privacy. These expanded capabilities could enhance trust and safety efforts across the digital landscape.

PhotoDNA is compatible with various hash exchanges and sharing initiatives, such as from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), and StopNCII.org, ensuring comprehensive coverage in the fight against harmful content.

How can companies implement the technology?

Through the Tech Coalition, companies of all sizes can receive prompt responses to licensing requests, typically within a week. This streamlined process allows organizations to swiftly integrate PhotoDNA into their platforms and accelerate their efforts to protect children and combat online exploitation. We are committed to supporting companies in their child safety initiatives by providing accessible tools and resources.

Both Tech Coalition members and non-members are encouraged to contact us for licensing information. The PhotoDNA code is available free of charge, and our team is ready to assist with implementation and can also provide member companies with ongoing support.
